Is Newlands Tamariki Playcentre for us?
Playcentre is about family. We attract parents who want to take part in their children’s learning through play. You would be working with a team of other parents and will have opportunities to participate in training to learn more about child development and behaviour. You will become part of a community where we care for all our families and encourage biculturalism.
You will experience a nurturing social environment where your children's learning will be enhanced by a well-resourced centre. They can explore through messy, creative, physical play and many more activities. You will also extend your own knowledge on subjects like planning and documenting your child's learning, positive guidance, extending your child’s creativity and much more that will help you with your parenting journey.
Playcentre benefits from a high ratio of adults to children. The children benefit from learning alongside children of different ages; they learn to care for each other and play co-operatively.
We provide permanent membership, including flexible terms for parents with young babies. We cater for children from birth to six years of age. Visitors are always welcome.

About Newlands-Tamariki Playcentre
In the early days parents ran two playcentres in Newlands out of local halls. In 1977 they agreed to join and relocate to a permanent building in Newlands Road, where Newlands Tamariki Playcentre is today. This foresight and the hard work of past families gave a home and sense of permanency to Playcentre in Newlands.
Newlands Tamariki Playcentre still has local families committed to Playcentre’s philosophy which is based on the importance of child-initiated play and parents as educators of their own children. To contribute to this philosophy, Playcentre offers training for parents so they can provide quality early childhood education for their children.
Today Newlands Tamariki Playcentre, in our commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and practising biculturalism, is proud to run a bilingual te reo session on Wednesdays. For this session we are joined by members of surrounding Playcentres and an employed te reo Māori speaker. We learn and practise te reo and tikanga Māori together.
